The US Web Team is a fast-moving, passionate group of frontend engineers who are committed to building a best-in-class experience for the buyers and sellers of Mercari.com. We own not just the web frontend, but our Backend For Frontend GraphQL Service, as well as our design system, our E2E testing suite and a number of other projects/services. While building out the latest features for our web services, we maintain our platform excellence through continuous foundational improvements and prioritizing the Developer Experience.

Work Responsibilities

• Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, QA, and other stakeholders to deliver features and improvements for Mercari.com and our related services.
• Write clean, maintainable, secure, and scalable code with complete test coverage, using Jest and Cypress.
• Identify industry trends and help shape our long-term technical roadmap, driving initiatives that strengthen our platform’s foundation.
• Proactively improve our team processes and platform foundations, driving product excellence and a top-tier Developer Experience (DX).
• Leverage AI tools and technology to drive innovation, advocating for seamless DX and easy-to-maintain codebase.

　
Unique Challenges

• Put your unique fingerprint on the product and platform direction by socializing your ideas for how to improve our features and the technology we use to deliver them.
• Build scalable and performant web experiences for tens of millions of active users on a high-traffic e-commerce platform.
• Balance rapid delivery of new features with a commitment to code quality and maintainability.
• Shape the future of our design system and backend-for-frontend architecture, ensuring consistency across our frontend platforms.
• Drive innovation by integrating AI tools and advocating for developer-friendly processes in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

　
Qualifications

• Required Experience/Skills
• 3+ years of hands-on experience working with TypeScript, Javascript (ES6+), React.js, Next.js, GraphQL and modern CSS
• Skilled at working within Agile development workflows (lean Scrum, etc.)
• Knowledge of web performance, accessibility, and security
• Knowledge of deploying in a frontend microservice environment (Kubernetes, cloud services, etc.).
• Experience optimizing sites running on Node.js
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Strong track record of working on cross-functional teams and with cross-geo teams
• Preferred Experience/Skills
• Experience working in e-commerce industry or building features for an online marketplace
• Experience optimizing web performance on both client and server
• SEO optimization
• Experience using error reporting and performance monitoring tools (e.g. Sentry)
• Experience deploying services to Google Cloud Platform
• In-depth experience with GraphQL
• Experience managing Kubernetes clusters
• Language Skills
• English: Business level (CEFR B2 or higher) required
• Japanese: Basic (CEFR - A2) optional
