This is a full-time position based in our office in Tokyo, Japan.Associate General Counsel, Japan Responsibilities
- Advise on legal matters relating to Japan, including privacy and data protection, content and safety, intermediary liability, antitrust, consumer protection, and e-commerce, in collaboration with the APAC and global legal teams, as well as public policy and communications
- Represent the company in connection with regulatory inquiries by regulators in Japan, as necessary
- Develop pro-regulatory strategies to engage and work with with legislators and governments in Japan to develop new legislation and regulatory frameworks
- Advisory and project management responsibility with respect to a broad range of legal subjects including corporate, commercial, regulatory, IP and employment matters in collaboration with the APAC and global legal teams
- Participation in other projects (both Asia-Pacific and global based) as directed
- A minimum of eight years of relevant legal experience, either at a law firm or in-house with at least three years at top-tier US, UK or Japanese law firm
- Native or near-native fluency in verbal and written Japanese and English communication skills required
- Business judgment and client counseling experience advising clients in a wide variety of subject matters
- Key skills in legal writing
- Proven track record in communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, and ability to work well with cross-functional teams
- Proven record of project management skills and the ability to manage several simultaneous projects in a multi-stakeholder environment under deadline pressure
- Experience prioritizing work and providing advice under tight deadlines
- Good judgment and ability to provide practical solutions
- Effective outside counsel management experience
- Meta requires all employed attorneys to have a law degree or equivalent certificate to permit the practice of law and be appropriately licensed and authorized to practice law for the company in their assigned work location. Unless prohibited under local law, an attorney must hold a current practicing certificate (including where required from the relevant authority in the jurisdiction of the assigned work location) or the local law equivalent bar registration or license as may be applicable
- Demonstrated knowledge of Asia-Pacific tech-regulatory landscape, authorities and frameworks
- Experience in tech industry
- In-house experience in Japan at a US-headquartered company a plus
