Coupang is looking for a talented lawyer to join our Global Legal team and play a leading role in supporting our businesses and operations in Japan. You will be responsible for developing and implementing Coupang’s legal and compliance strategy for HR, employment, and labor in Japan.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and execute on a variety of legal and compliance matters across Coupang’s businesses and operations in Japan related to HR, employment, and labor. You will be hands-on with end-to-end responsibility for all legal support in these areas.
- Support business and operations growth from an HR, employment, and labor law perspective. This will mean partnering closely and collaboratively with internal business partners including HR, Compliance, as well as with business and operations leaders.
- Prepare, advise on, and maintain employment contracts, Rules of Employment, HR policies, and related contracts and documents.
- Manage HR, employment, and labor-related litigation and investigations that may arise in Japan.
- Manage HR, employment, and labor-related regulatory affairs in Japan and represent Coupang in connection with any inquiries by regulators in Japan.
- Manage and instruct external law firms.
- Demonstrate hands on experience but also the ability to handle and manage projects with other members of the team.
Basic Qualifications:
- Qualified and admitted/licensed lawyer in Japan. Strong foreign qualified lawyers from the U.S. or a common law jurisdiction (e.g., Australia, UK, Singapore) with extensive experience working in Japan may be considered.
- At least 10+ years of post-qualification legal experience. A mixture of law firm and in-house experience is preferred.
- Fluency in written and spoken Japanese is mandatory. Professional level English fluency.
- Exceptional ability to consistently deliver creative, thoughtful, and business-oriented results that appropriately balance growth and risk in a fast-paced environment.
- A willingness to learn voraciously and take on new scope and challenges.
- Ability to adapt easily to rapid and diverse business changes.
- Strong and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Sound judgment in developing and implementing legal solutions.
